Tax Season’s In Full Swing

by Joy Johnson on March 3, 2021

The IRS has been accepting returns since February 12th and everything seems to be running smoothly – so long as you don’t need to actually talk to anyone at the IRS.

It seems the IRS computerized systems are working but the rest of it, not so much. There are rumors of a backlog of unopened mail that ranges from hundreds of thousands to millions of pieces. If the mechanical systems aren’t handling it, the chances of it getting handled in an expeditious manner are zero. Phone wait times are routinely in the 45 minutes to an hour range and then you’re far more likely to hear a click and a dial tone than a voice.

Since mail handling is questionable from both the USPS and the IRS side, consider paying your tax bill electronically and having any refund deposited electronically. I can add bank account info to your return to make that happen.

The lack of ability to call the IRS and hear a voice on the other end of the line in a reasonable period of time dependably disappeared early last year – probably with the first COVID-related changes. Don’t count on them coming back anytime soon.
